Freedoms Foundation Award, November 11, 2004
- Marlborough Elementary School received a national award from the
Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge in the special events category for
planning and hosting a Veterans' Recognition Day which was held on
May 24, 2004. Some of the many committee members who made the event
possible were able to attend the lovely ceremony and reception held on
Veterans' Day. (See photo below.)
- 183 veterans and their guests came to Marlborough for breakfast and
tours of our school. They attended an assembly featuring patriotic songs
and poems by the children and speakers from our legislature and our
military. Students who have family members on active duty were
recognized. After the assembly, veterans were invited to visit
classrooms for questions and answers. A cherry blossom tree was
dedicated to the service of our local veterans.

Recognition Dinner, November 12, 2004
The Nineteenth Upper Perkiomen School District Recognition Dinner was
held at The Best Western at Towamencin in Kulpsville.
- The Upper Perkiomen School District Recognition Dinner is held annually each fall to honor employees as they achieve milestones in
their careers with the district. These milestones are 15, 20, 25 and 30
years of service, plus retirement.
- The event has always been a joint effort between the School District
and the Association. This unique co-operation is a source of pride for
both organizations. The tradition began in 1985 under the direction of
Dr. Thomas Persing, UPSD Superintendent, and Mr. Jim Yenser, UPEA President.
The first event planners were Sandy English, Secretary, and Paulette
Mack, First Grade Teacher, who organized enjoyable and successful dinners for 17 years.
Current planners are Gisele McCabe, Secretary, and Julie Weller, Sixth
Grade Teacher.
- School Board Directors, Administrators, Teachers, Secretaries,
Instructional Aides, Food Service Workers and Custodians all receive the
same gifts from the district for their years of service. The gifts are
calligraphed fraktur certificates for 15 years, engraved pen and pencil
sets for 20 years, engraved pewter plates for 25 years and engraved
watches for 30 years of service.
- Upon retirement, the Association provides its members a crystal
clock with an engraved wooden base and the District gives all other
employees a similar clock.
- The Association provides corsages and boutonnières for all retirees
and flower arrangements for the dining room tables. For retiring board
members, the Association gratefully acknowledges their volunteer service
with engraved letter openers.
- Speakers for the evening are usually successful graduates of UPHS
who are often members of the Academic Hall of Fame.
